Carnforth Railway Station
Carnforth
Carnforth Station was opened in 1846 by the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway Company. Expanded in the 1850's the station was rebuilt in 1880 and again in 1937. It declined in the 1960's following the Beeching cuts and the mainline platforms were removed in 1970 for the electrification of the West Coast mainline. By the 1990's it was in a derelict state and was rescued by the Carnforth Railway and Heritage Trust. It now has a visitor centre remembering the use of the station for the 1945 film 'Brief Encounter'.
