Huntroyde Hall Grand National House Party, 1914. Burnley Express April 1st 1914 reported that "L.ast week for the Grand National, Mr. & Mrs. Edmund A. le Gendre Starkie of Huntroyde entertained a number of guests". The photo was taken by J.R. Brunton & Son with flashlight .Back row: Mr. Potter, Sir Joseph Tichbourne, Lady Young, Col. Nickalls, Mrs. Mostyn, Capt. Denison; Middle row: Mr. Starkie (Host), Lord Berwick, Lord Fairfax, Earl of Lisburne, Lady Mary Plunkett, Baroness Beaumont; Front: Miss Vickers, Mrs. Nickalls, Miss Williams, Mrs. Starkie (hostess), Lady Enid Vaughan, Mrs. Potter. Edmund Arthur Le Gendre Starkie, born 13 April 1871, and died in 1958 in Nelson. He was patron of the livings of Padiham, Sabden and Rufford, JP. DL, Captain & Hon. Major 3rd Batt. East Lancashire Regiment. Educated at Eton & Christ Church, Oxford. Edmund served in the Boer War. He and his wife gave Huntroyd to be used as a convalescent home during the First World War. They were prominent local supporters of the Red Cross and St. John's Ambulance Brigade. After his death, the estate passed to his nephew, Guy Le Gendre and the house was partially demolished in 1969 and sold in 1983. He married his first wife Maud daughter of the late Major William Michael Ince Anderton of Euxton Hall on 19 Jul 1898.She was born 1873 in London died 19 March 1929.
