18.1.1820 - 8 February 1887. In 1876, on the death of Richard Shaw, Burnley's first M.P., Peter Rylands, also a Liberal was elected having previously been M.P. for Warr, losing his seat in 1874. He came from Warrington where he was a wire manufacturer, active in local government. Re-elected in 1880 and 1885 as a Liberal, in 1886 when the Liberal party split over Home Rule, he stood as a Liberal Unionist and held the seat. On his death in 1887, the seat passed to John Slagg, Liberal.
