General notes
The origins of St. Leonard's Church date back to 1451, when Henry VI granted John Marshall a licence to purchase land in Padiham for the construction of a Chantry chapel. This was rebuilt in the 1520's. By 1766, due to an increasing population, the chapel was considered too small. It was enlarged by rebuilding and widening the nave and adding two thirds of the chancel to it. Of the church built in the 16th century, only the tower and part of the chancel remained. The results of the overhaul can be seen in this drawing.
Less than 100 years after the rebuilding of the church was completed it was again considered too small for the needs of an ever expanding town. This led to the construction of the present church, which has seating capacity of 1,000 people.
