Taken from Booth Street, the building on the left is the Technical College, opened 1895. To the right is the Public Library.
The earliest record of the Nelson Fire Brigade dates back to 1879 when the 'Fire Station' was situated in the bedroom of a private house. Equipment consisted of a stand pipe and a few lengths of hose with a superintendent in charge of five men.
In 1880 they moved to an old barn in Leeds Road, but this was unsatisfactory so they moved to Ellen Street, when a light lorry and an extra man were added.
In 1890, the station shown was constructed.
The Station consisted of a superintendent and twenty men.
The fire engine used was called 'Lord Nelson' and was horse drawn. This was added to in 1902 by a engine called 'Marsden'
In 1914 the first motorised unit was purchased and the 'Lord Nelson' was disposed of.
In addition the brigade also took charge of the Ambulance Carriage.
In 1947 Nelson Fire Station became part of Lancashire County Fire Brigade.
This station was replaced by a new station on Bradley Road on 24th March 1970.
This old station was soon demolished and a temporary office building was erected on the site.
