James Briggs, Sarah Ellen Cronshaw
The original Woodman Inn pictured was incorporated into a block of 5 cottages by James Briggs in 1838. He started in one cottage which he developed over time to include the remaining 4 cottages. This building was demolished in 1914 and rebuilt at its current site of 129 Todmorden Rd. The last landlady of the original Woodman was Sarah Ellen Cronshaw. Trams 41 and 42 were built by the Electric Railway and Carriage Works of Preston, (Dick, Kerr) which became United Electric Car Company, and ultimately English Electric.
