A. Victor Smith, W.H. Smith
Victor Smith was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross in 1916 for self sacrifice. Victor was in the process of throwing a grenade when it slipped from his hand into the bottom of the trench. He alerted those around him, but realised that they would not be able to reach safety in time. Without hesitation he flung himself upon the grenade which resulted in instant death, but undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his fellow service men. Here he can be seen with his father W.H. Smith who was the Chief Constable of Burnley and his mother.
