Henry Nutter's biography can be found in "Some Burnley People" (author Steven Child), and other local history publications held at Burnley Library. Born Barrowford, one of 12 children of a master shoemaker, he married Maria Barry of a local textile family and they moved to Burnley in 1861 where he established Rakehead Cotton mill and became prosperous. A man of liberal ideas, with an obsession for Robbie Burns, he was a prominent Liberal Councillor, actively involved in the Mechanics' Institute, founder member of the Burnley Literary and Scientific Club, for which he wrote papers on literature, astronomy and evolution, being a pioneer of Darwinism. He was also a musician and poet, specialising in amusing verse for special occasions. In 1866 he and others bought the copyright to the Burnley Gazette newspaper to further the Liberal cause. After suffering losses in the cotton trade, and ruined by a fire at his mill he went to work selling cloth on the Manchester Exchange. He died on 10.12.1897 as a result of having been knocked down on 24.11.97 by a cyclist in Manchester, after initially disregarding his injuries. The Lancashire Evening Post reported on the inquest on 13.12.97 p.2. The funeral took place at St. Thomas's Barrowford on 14.12.97. The Burnley Gazette 15.12.97 p 2 reported it "was attended by many of those social circles where his radiant soul diffused sunshine and serenity among all with whom he came in contact."
