The remains of Greenhalgh Castle with
Councillor Frank Walmsley in the foreground.
The castle was built in 1490, became a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War, surrendering after a bitter siege in May 1645. It was then partially destroyed to stop further Military use and thereafter fell into total decline.
