Scott Park was opened on the 8th August 1893. The funds for the park had been bequeathed by John Hargreaves Scott, a prominent local Victorian business man. A monument to John, mounted with a bust, was constructed in the centre to commemorate his gift.

The park was designed by Robert Murray. The original design was added to in 1897 when a bowling green was constructed. A further addition in the early 20th century was that of a wood, which had previously belonged to Hood House.
