General notes
The Burnley Express on 18.3.1931 reported in full on the visit. The report tells us that In the centre with the stick is Alderman Compston, of Rawtenstall, the oldest member, and also amongst those present were Major Halstead (Macclesfield), Chairman, D. Stansfield (Royton), Dep. Chairman, Richard Ainsworth, the Accrington historian, Mr. A.H. Peace, (Droylsden), Editor of the quarterly review and J.R. Swann (Kirkham) Secretary but does not identify them on the photo. The association was welcomed by Mayor Alderman H.R. Nuttall, who mentioned that Gracie Fields was a distinguished member. After their visit they adjourned to the Co-operative Tea Rooms when there were talks and entertainment. Miss L. Wood, formerly a leading member of the Burnley Literary and Scientific Club, which had recently folded, and retired headmistress of Burnley Girls' High School gave a talk on "The Literary Associations of Burnley & District." The authors' association, which was founded in 1909, still exists. Their book collection is held at Accrington Library.
