General notes
The banks at Horse Shoe Bend are very prone to landslips in extreme weather, revealing the very red ground beneath.
These 'red scars' are believed to have given the name to Red Scar House, home of the Hoghton family, which was situated just above the bank. The mansion is long gone - its place marked by a park bench - and the area is now the Red Scar Industrial Estate.
On Remembrance Sunday 1950, a group of anglers were caught in such a landslip, and two tragically died.
