Towneley Villa was built ca. 1846 as a residence for the priest serving Burnley Wood R.C. Chapel. The land between Leven St., and Tarleton Ave., was donated by Peregrine Edward Towneley. It came to be inhabited by laymen when Turf Moor House, purchased from Mr. Greenwood, became St. Mary's Presbytery.
