This image was loaned by Miss Sylvia Smith of Preston in 2012. It shows Miss Smith's father leading one of the horses he worked with in the 1952 Guild procession. The horses were stabled at a yard in Christian Road and were used to pull carts for deliveries to shops. Mr Smith loved horses but as they lived in the centre of Preston they were unable to keep a horse - working with them was the next best thing. He worked for British Rail - goods were unloaded from the trains onto horse-drawn wagons/carts then delivered to shops.
