Henry Hyndman, leader of the Social Democratic Federation, stood for parliament in Burnley unsuccessfully four times, 1895, 1906 and twice in 1910. He died in 1921. He is speaking to the crowd in Burnley Market Place, the shops in the picture are C. Mitchell, Silk Manufacturer, no. 19, Evans Tailor, no. 17 and Lipton's Grocers, 15 Market St. It is obviously summertime and possibly August 1905, as Hyndman is reported as addressing a crowd in the Market Place on Sunday 20th August 1905.
