General notes
Burton Well was the local water supply for Silverdale Green
Because there were no surface streams or rivers in the area, local people depended on the different wells for water both for themselves and for their livestock. Burton Well supplied water to the people at Silverdale Green for many years. In 1900 Silverdale was one of the largest communities in Lancaster rural district without piped water.
Burton Well was still in use, when in 1934 the Parish Council improved the well by demolishing a nearby pin-fold and built a retaining wall around the well. It was covered with corrugated iron and an iron hand pump was installed. Piped water didnt arrive until 1938 when the Lune Valley Water Board tapped into the Haweswater to Manchester aqueduct, to bring a piped water supply to Silverdale.
