General notes
William Mitchell J.P., (27.6.1838 - 5.3.1914) was Conservative M.P. for Burnley from 1900 - 1906. A former pupil of Burnley Grammar School, he was a woollen manufacturer and merchant from Waterfoot with six mills. Having previously failed to be elected in Accrington and Middleton he defeated the Liberal party incumbent the Hon. Philip Stanhope by 600 votes. The Burnley Express which supported the Conservative candidate offered readers "a sixpenny picture for nothing" - a souvenir portrait of Mr. Mitchell on card, proudly printed in their own works. His election slogan on poster was "Uphold your flag, support "Bobs" and your own lads at the front. Vote for Mitchell, the local Man." A reference to the Boer War, 1899-1902. He did not stand again in 1906 when the seat was re-taken for the Liberal Party by Fred Maddison. He lived at Fern Hill, Stacksteads, which his widow and family offered for use as a military hospital during WW1.
