General notes
Two rams photographed on Mr Robinson's farm at Catlow in Dalehead in 1922.
Catlow Farm sits on the lower slopes of Pike Side fell overlooking the upper reaches of the Hodder. The local conditions make it good pasture, especially for sheep, as exemplified in this photograph. The examples in this photograph clearly show healthy, well-managed animals.
According to the note accompanying this photograph, "the sheep appear to be of the 'Dorset Horn' breed, prized for their adaptability, production of excellent wool and capacity to produce large numbers of lambs".
Whilst the sheep pictured have the very distinctive horn shape of the Dorset, they do not have that breed's white face and, thus, are more likely Swaledales which are still numerous in Bowland-or another black-faced breed such as Scotch Blackface.
