The Society was formed in 1893 and dissolved at the end of 1916. From October 1894 they met in rooms at Scar House, Church Street Burnley. (GIS reference above given for approximate location, it was demolished in 1935) (Actual location of image unconfirmed.)

Information with the photo states that George Hindle, engineer and author of "Tales of the Brun" published in 1896, is on the back row far right, and second from left on front row is William Christian, who became a manager at O. and J. Folds' Rishton Mill on Yorkshire Street, having worked there for 45 years when he died on 9.4.19 aged 59. (Obit Burnley Express 19.4.1919 p 9) George Hindle was born 1852, died 23 March 1916 (Burnley Express 25.3.1916 p 9).Many prominent local men were founder members, the society held lectures, exhibitions, rambles etc.
