General notes
The Chancel Door, on the south side of the Chancel, is sometimes known as the Priest's Door. The one in this image is believed to be late Norman and has retained its original ironwork. An almost unique feature is the head of the original door knocker in the form of Jesus with His hair in the style worn in the 13th Century. The knocker and its "ring" attaching it to the knocker head are no longer present. It is thought possible that this was a Sanctuary Knocker; the Church is thought likely to be large and prestigious enough to warrant the authority to grant Sanctuary. There is no definitive proof, however.
