On 23rd May 1888 the Lifeboat Monument was unveiled in St Annes to commemorate the bravery of the crews of the Laura Janet Lifeboat (the entire crew were lost) and the Eliza Fernley (2 crewman perished). Twenty-seven crewmen in all perished in the attempt to resuce the stricken barque, "Mexico of Hamburg" on December 9th, 1886. The view on the photograph shows the original buildings for those that are now the St.Ives Hotel (on the left) and the Dalmeny and Fernlea Hotels (on the right),
