This hostelry existed in the 17th century when Charles Haworth and Edward Holmes were hosts. Date on rear of building is 1751 with initials of Ralph Walmsley. It is mentioned during the 18th Century in St James church wardens book as entertaining preachers etc. James Cunliffe occupied the inn during the early 19th century and is mentioned in 1818.
The assembly room was formerly the chief place in the village for meetings and it was here that the Accrington Discussion Class commenced, while the August Fair was first held on the Bay Horse pavement in 1825. North East Lancashire Weavers (later Accrington Weavers Association) commenced here in 1856.
It was purchased by St James Church just visible over rooftop) in 1920 as part of its extension scheme.
