Bandstand in Victoria Park
Nelson
In 1886 a local act was passed giving Nelson Local Board the power to create recreation grounds. In May of that year an agreement was signed with Mr Every-Clayton for the purchase of 20 acres for recreation grounds adjacent to Carr Road and east of Pendle Water. Of this 8 acres were set aside for a public park. Ten years later further land was acquired on the western side of Pendle Water. A bandstand was built in this new area and opened in 1912. For many years it offered a range of musical events and provided a centrepiece for the annual Nelson Show. Unfortunately it began to suffer from vandalism in the 1980's. After a decade of neglect, a three year renovation project between the council and the Friends of Victoria Park resulted in the bandstand reopening on 9th June 2006.
