The extensive Catlow Quarries quarries were first worked in the 1830's by Robert Hartley and Richard Elliot. By 1848 the quarries were valued at £576 per annum and theiur stone could be found in many East Lancashire towns. The quarries provided most of the stone for the houses in Nelson. In 1890 250 men were employed at the quarries. In 2013 there was still some small scale workings at the site. Monochrome original (sepia) scanned with true colour setting
