St Mary's Church Nelson
Nelson
St Mary's Church, Nelson from Maurice Street. The foundation stone for the church was laid in June 1877 and the church was consecrated on March 25th 1879. The Ecroyd family gave the land and £4000 towards the cost of the church, the rest of the £10,000 cost being raised by public subscription. The Architects were Waddington and Son of Burnley. The spire (191 feet high) was added by 1908. Some of the stained glass was by Edward Burne Jones and other stained glass came from the William Morris works. The church was declared redundant in 1989 and sold to a private developer, who later (1996), applied for permission to demolish it which was refused. Pendle Borough Council approached the Heritage Trust for the North West who acquired the building in 2000. Extensive repairs have been carried out and the church is now a centre for traditional buidling craft skills.
