General notes

Photograph shows the western portal of Foulridge Canal Tunnel, Leeds and Liverpool Canal. This canal was one of the major engineering feats of the canal's construction. At 1640 yards long, it took five years to construct, (opening in 1796), using the 'cut and cover' method as it was so near the surface. In 1912 a cow called Buttercup fell in the canal and swam though the tunnel. This rather blurred slide of an original photograph shows a steam vessel about to enter the tunnel. Steam tugs were used for horse drawn barges at Foulridge from 1879 until the 1940's.
