Donated by Miss Jones of Worsthorne, postcard with facsimile signature appealing to be re-elected "after 7 years of service to keep Burnley a radical constituency." Philip James Stanhope from an aristocratic family, with two older brothers who became Conservative M.Ps., was the Liberal Party candidate chosen to succeed the infamous Jabez Balfour, and was duly elected in 1893 with a majority of 693 over the Conservative W. Lindsay. He was previously M.P. for Wednesbury. Stanhope was a Radical, a supporter of Home Rule, anti-war, who despite his background, campaigned to reform the House of Lords. His wife was also active in the Liberal party, known as Countess Tolstoy she was the widow of a relative of the author. He was re-elected in 1895 with a further reduced majority, when for the first time there was also a Socialist Candidate Henry Hyndman. Stanhope went on to represent Harborough. In 1906 he was elevated to the peerage as the first Baron Weardale of Stanhope in the county of Durham. He died aged 75 when the title became extinct as he had no issue.
