General notes
The Stonyhurst Observatory was built in 1838 as an astronomical and meteorological centre. It had a distinguished career for well over one hundred years and was recognised for its excellence by scientists internationally. During the Second World War it sent weather reports to the Air Ministry and later provided weather reports to local press and radio. Readings were continued until 1977 when the equipment was transferred to the College science laboratories. It later functioned as a Tea Room for visitors to the College.
