Initials supposed to be of John Bright (1811-1889) carved on his desk at Newton School.
John Bright was a Quaker, British Radical, Liberal statesman and one of the greatest orators of his time. Born in Rochdale he spent the last two years at school in Newton. A Member of Parliament from1843-1889 he formed the Anti- Corn Law movement together with Richard Cobden and achieved their aim of having the Law repealed in 1845.
The building is no longer a school.
