General notes
During the First World War the Army established a remount depot in Lathom Park. The railway bringing horses ran from Wigan Station to Skelmersdale with a spur into Lathom Park. Other horses were unloaded at Ormskirk and walked through Cranes Lane to the Park. The railway stayed in use until the 1920's when it was demolished. Up to November 1917 210,000 horses passed through this depot.
