General notes
From the Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser Sat 28 Sept 1907: WAGGONS WRECK A STATION.,MAN KILLED AT HOLME. At Holme Station, midway between Burnley and Todmorden, yesterday, a serious accident occurred on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. A goods train from Normanton to Aintree was coming down the gradient, which is one in eighty yards, to the station when some waggons became derailed. These crashed into station, jumped the rails, and ran along the platform. The line was torn up for a considerable distance, the platform badly damaged, and the office wrecked. William Pym, a porter, acting as relief stationmaster in the absence, on his holidays, of the regular station-master, in the office at the time, was killed. He was a married man, about twenty-eight years of age, and lived at Holme. The crash was distinctly heard throughout the village, and people rushed to the spot to ascertain the cause. The up platform was all swept away, and three or four of the telescoped waggons were found on the bottom portion of the platform. First the waggons encountered a lamp-post, and then the booking office and general waiting-room., which were completely carried away. The heavy waggons were smashed to atoms, and tons of pig iron, coals, and sacks of onions were strewn on the line. Most of the other waggons were more or less damaged. Break- down gangs from Accrington and Newton Heath were got as quickly as possible to work clearing away the debris, but the line was blocked several hours.
