The church was built in 1837 in a Romanesque design by the Lancaster architect Edmund Sharpe, the foundation stone was laid on 28 July 1836 by Robert Townley Parker of Cuerden Hall, who gave the land for the church. It was enlarged in 1886/7, and the altered church is Grade ll listed. The land for the churchyard was donated by Mr.R.A.Tatton of Cuerdale Hall.
