Ellel
Ellel Grange was built in 1858 and remained in the Sandemann family (Port producers) until 1979.
The house was listed (Grade II) during 1979, along with St. Marys Church (which was built in the grounds in 1879 by W & G Audsley and decorated with stained glass by Paley & Austin) and the Preston Family Mausoleum built 1873.
The contents of the house, including its Gillows furniture, were sold at auction by Christies of London for 368,000 pounds.
The house, along with the St. Marys Church and Rose cottage, was purchased by local hoteliers for 125,000 pounds.
Over the next two years the building was "renovated", removing many original features and the ballroom and conservatory demolished (without permission). It opened as a Health Hydro in 1981 and was subsequently the headquarters of a religious sect.
