General notes
The infamous 'Scotforth Murder', which achieved national prominence at the time, took place near the village of Scotforth near Lancaster in 1866.
Elizabeth Nelson, a domestic servant from Skerton, was strangled on Green Lane. The murder remains unsolved.
Public donations were used to raise a memorial to Elizabeth which was erected at the site of the murder and was replaced with this facsimile plaque at that place when the University was developed on the site.
