From the pier head at Heskin the coal was moved in hinged carts drawn by cart horses to the textile mills in Eccleston and Leyland and to the railway extension line at Charnock Richard. Domestic users had coal delivered by the cwt or ton by local farmers who would tip the coal outside one's cottage for 4 1/2d per cwt.
