Lancaster
Stephen Eckard
"Eckard surveys the silted bed of the Lune, tragedy of Lancaster's commercial history. Starting more or less neck-and-neck with Liverpool as the major port of England's north-west about the beginning of the 17th century, the city lost its fight against the river's sandbanks and has not survived as a comparable port. Where merchant ships once lay you could not now sail a dinghy. Ships up to 600 tons still tie-up lower down."
From a single request originating from station WTAG, Worcester, Massachusetts., has grown a long series of town to town broadcasts in the North Amercian service of the BBC. The most recent programme was made in Lancaster, England for Lancaster, Massachusetts by Stephen Eckhard, Amercian-born producer of the BBC. The progamme was broad cast in non-advertising time.
