Benjamin Hargreaves
Born Nov 21st 1806 and died July 4th 1880. In his day he was styled 'a friend of the poor' and was exceedingly popular. His vocation lay in doing good, and scattering benefits rather than heaping up riches. He was a partner for a time at Broad Oak Print Works. He built Arden Hall, and was first member of the Accrington Subscription Library, later the Mechanics Institute, of which he was President a great many years. To 'Mr Benjamin' more than to any other gentleman, Accrington owes the Peel Institute (now Town Hall). Joining the local Board in 1870 he was one of the defeated 'non political' candidates at the first Municipal Election, the Aldermanic bench he declined.
