John Mercer (1791 - 1866) was born at Dean in Great Harwood. He received no formal education and began work as a bobbin winder in 1800. He later became a handloom weaver and then was employed as a chemist at Oakenshaw printworks. In the 1840s, he developed the process of mercerization, which he patented in 1850. He was buried in the family vault at St Bartholomew's church.
