Miss Martha Little was appointed Matron of Burnley Victoria Hospital in June 1933 on the sudden death of Miss Alexander, being already Deputy Matron. When she retired in 1952, she had worked at the hospital for 40 years. From 1917 to February 1919 she served with Queen Alexandra's Imperial Nursing Service (Reserve). Others identified on the photo are Back Row Mr. Guy Southern, Mr. Robinson Place, Mr. John Thornber J.P., Front row, Mr. Thomas (Sec to Workpeople's Hospital Committee), unknown lady, Miss Little, Mrs. Emily Thornber; plus unidentified gentleman, behind the railings. The named gentlemen were all prominent citizens and members of the Board of Management of Victoria Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Thornber were major benefactors of the hospital, and donated some £12,000 to build and equip, with no expense spared, a new nurse's home in April 1938, which was described as "a model of ideal housing" . Location of this photo unknown.
