Photograph of an engraving. Burgoyne was Preston MP from 1768 until his death in 1792. He was the commander of the English forces which surrendered at Saratoga in the American War of Independence. This engraving is the frontispiece to a collected edition of his plays printed in Dublin in 1794. He was one of the heroes in Bernard Shaw's play, "The Devil's Disciple".
