General notes

The Strawberry Gardens was a pleasure grounds in Heysham, On land bounded by Heysham Road, Knowlys Road, Rayners Field (by the shore), and what is now Heysham Avenue. It provided formal gardens, fruit picking and an entertainments complex and lay at the end of the tramway from Heysham, which was notable for an early use of petrol driven tramcars.

The photographer is standing in the entrance to what is now Sugham Lane, and the pathway inside the main gate still exists as an alleyway giving access to Back Heysham Road.

After the gardens closed, the land was redeveloped, and none of the buildings survive.the land is now occupied by housing to the rear (completed 1938) and shops along the main road- currently the area to the right of the gate is occupied by a branch of the NatWest Bank, while the land off to the left of the picture is occupied by a later public house which perpetuated the name "Strawberry Gardens", which is still used for this locality.

Mr Eastwood had a Chemist shop in Lancaster, and took a selection of images around Morecambe on glass plates around the turn of the 20th century.
