Cotton warp will not weave properly unless it has been well 'sized'. The sizing process involves adding a strengthening substance which will strengthen, smoothen and give it a tough appearance. A number of substances were used to create this effect, including Farina (ground potato starch), wax, soap, china clay and softeners, such as refined animal fats. The process of adding the sizing substance to the warp, occurs in the sizing (or taping) machines seen here, sometimes known as 'slashers'.
