Whalley Village The Weir
Whalley
The weir was thought to have originally been built some 600 years ago by the monks of Whalley Abbey to allow the collection of water, the river having two small islands at this point. It was later used as the start of a channel to carry water to a water wheel to power a corn mill which has now been converted to flats. An Archimedes wheel was installed in the weir in September 2014 to power a hydro electric generator producing enough power for 90 homes.
