George Grundy
Sergeant George Grundy was born in St. Helens, but later moved to Padiham where he became well known for his footballing talents. In 1914 he enlisted to fight the Germans, but didn't travel to the front line until 1917. In the army he specialised in musketry, fitness and as a bomb instructor. His footballing prowess was also recognised and he became captain of a regimental team. He was awarded the military medal in 1917 for "devotion to duty and helping to re-organise a company when badly shaken, and later rescuing comrades under heavy shell fire". Unfortunately, despite this gallantry George was killed in action on the 6th November 1918.
