The hall, "a building of exceptional interest" (Pevsner: Buildings of England, Lancashire North. 2009. p191), along with over 60 acres of parkland, came into the possession of Burnley Corporation in Novemeber 1901 and opened to the public the following year as an art gallery and museum.
