New bridge for Clitheroe Road, Brierfield, looking towards Brierfield Mills
Brierfield
The new bridge was part of the works associated with the building of the M65 motorway. Construction on this stretch began in March 1978 and it was opened to traffic in October 1981. Brierfield Mills was formed in 1904 from the former Tunstill Mills. Smith & Nephew took the business over in 1957. The mill closed in 2010 and was eventually bought by Pendle Council. They entered a joint venture with local company Barnfield and produced the 'Northlight' plan for an integrated business, enterprise, leisure and residential development. The terraced houses beyond the bridge, (Berkley, Claremont and Belgrave streets), were demolished to make way for the new Foxfields housing development (under construction 2017).
