Born 1890., eldest of three daughters of Fred W Steele a well known Burnley solicitor, and Territorial officer and his wife Alice, Gertrude was a gifted artist and sculptor, regularly winning prizes at Burnley Art School Adult Classes and amateur art exhibitions. She was associated with Burnley Oral and Deaf society, and Burnley Deaf School, being herself hearing/speech impaired ( described in the language of the time as "deaf and dumb" ). In 1926 Gertrude moved to Paignton where her surviving sister Emmeline was living. Gertrude was a woman of independent means, and continued to exhibit her work in amateur exhibitions. In 1942 she married Gordon Malpas, also described as "deaf and dumb", with the wedding being signed by the Rev. A.F. Mackenzie, of the Devon and Exeter Mission to the Adult Deaf .
