General notes
On August 15th and 16th 1648 Oliver Cromwell stayed at Gisburne Park, then called Lower Hall and a jointure house of the Asshetons and Listers Cromwell was joined by General Lambert and Sir John Assheton. His troops were stabled with their horses in the church, resulting in damage to the stained glass windows. The following is an extract from a letter dispatched by Cromwell.
"Hearing the enemy advance into Lancs we marched on 15th. August to Gisburn; 16th to Hodder Bridge, over the Ribble, here we held Council of War."
There seems no evidence as to which room Cromwell slept in and the house has been considerably altered.
