Four leaders of the Socialist Democratic Federation from L-R: A.A. Purcell, Southport Councillor and Trade Union leader, Dan Irving, (see images 274565/6); Harry Quelch, editor of the SDF journal "Justice", President, London Trades Council, and international socialist; Henry M. Hyndman, (see images 274347/8). The "Clarion" was a socialist newspaper. In 1895 readers began organising cycling groups which eventually led to the establishment of very popular Clarion club houses in the countryside. This particular Handforth Club House was located in a farmhouse from 1903 -1936 and offered dormitory accommodation, camping and entertainment to cyclists and hikers etc., escaping industrial towns.
