General notes
Steam powered trams were introduced to Nelson in Feb 1885 to transport Mill Workers cheaply from ever expanding town outskirts. Due to their noise and unreliability the steam trams were never popular. The Burnley Cooperation tram shown is one of the first electric trams to run in the town. Nelson Cooperation's first tram did not run until 23rd February 1903. In fact this is probably the inaugural run from Burnley to Nelson on 19 March 1902 when local officials and dignatories travelled the new section from Burnley to Nelson, see Burnley Express 19.3.1902 p. 3 report. The invention of the Diesel engine spelt the end for the tram, as buses were now much cheaper to run than the tram service. The last tram left the Charles Street Shed on 6th January 1934. Taken outside Lord Nelson Inn. The Salam Chapel can be seen at the top of the image.
